ABOUT ME
Hello I'm Helen
I am a Specialist Child & Adolescent Integrative Psychotherapist and Play Therapist, supporting children and young people aged 5–18 with their emotional and psychological wellbeing. I have over 15 years' experience supporting children, young people and families, across education, NHS and private practice settings. Since 2021, I have worked within NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS), including both community and crisis services. This has given me experience of supporting young people with a wide range of emotional and psychological difficulties, including more complex presentations, alongside working closely with parents, carers, schools and other professionals. I am a Registered Member MBACP (Accred) and hold a full enhanced DBS and postgraduate qualifications in Counselling Children & Young People and Play Therapy. I believe that children and young people need to feel understood, accepted and safe before they can begin to make sense of what they are experiencing. My approach is integrative and developmentally informed, which means I don't believe that one type of therapy is right for every young person. I draw from attachment and developmental psychology, person-centred and humanistic approaches, trauma-informed practice, systemic perspectives and CBT-informed interventions. My specialist Play Therapy training also allows me to use play, creativity and expressive approaches where these are helpful. For some young people, talking may be the most helpful way forward. For others, particularly younger children, it can be easier to communicate through play, art, stories, sand tray or other creative activities. With teenagers, creative approaches can be adapted around their interests and preferences and used alongside therapeutic conversation. I therefore tailor therapy around the individual young person rather than their age or diagnosis alone. Children and young people may come to therapy for many different reasons. Sometimes there is a clear difficulty or diagnosis; at other times, parents simply notice that their child is struggling or that something has changed. I can support young people experiencing: Anxiety, worry and panic Low mood, depression and emotional distress Low self-esteem, confidence and difficulties with self-worth Emotional regulation difficulties and overwhelming emotions Trauma and difficult or adverse life experiences Attachment, relationships and difficulties feeling safe or connected Friendship and peer difficulties, including bullying School-related anxiety, emotional difficulties and adjustment Family difficulties and significant changes or transitions OCD and anxiety-related difficulties Emotional and psychological difficulties associated with neurodevelopmental differences, including ADHD and autism I also work with young people who may be struggling to understand or express what they are feeling, even when there isn't a clear difficulty. Sometimes behaviour is the way a child communicates that something isn't quite right. Therapy can provide a space to look beyond the behaviour and understand what may be happening underneath. I aim to create a therapeutic relationship where young people feel listened to without judgement and are able to explore difficult experiences at their own pace. I also recognise that supporting a child or young person often means supporting the adults around them. Where appropriate, I work collaboratively with parents and carers and can provide guidance to help them understand what may be happening beneath their child's behaviour and how they can support them at home. I also work alongside schools and other professionals when this is helpful and appropriate. A little about Mandala I created Mandala Psychotherapies because I wanted to provide a space where children, young people and their families could access thoughtful, individualised support without feeling that they had to fit into a particular box. The name Mandala reflects the idea that every person is made up of many different experiences, relationships, strengths and challenges. Therapy can provide an opportunity to bring some of these pieces together, make sense of them and find a way forward. Whether your child is struggling with anxiety, emotional regulation, low mood, relationships, school, a difficult life experience or simply doesn't seem quite themselves, you don't need to know exactly what they need before getting in touch. We can start by talking about what is happening and work it out together.

Ways we can work together
Every child and young person is different, and therapy shouldn't be one-size-fits-all. I provide specialist therapeutic support for children and young people aged 5–18, drawing on my postgraduate training in Counselling Children & Young People and Play Therapy, alongside my experience working within NHS Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services (CAMHS). I use an integrative, developmentally informed approach, drawing from attachment and developmental psychology, person-centred and humanistic approaches, trauma-informed practice, systemic perspectives and CBT-informed interventions. My Play Therapy training also enables me to incorporate play, creativity and expressive approaches where these are helpful. The way we work together will depend on your child's age, development, personality, experiences and individual needs. For some young people this may involve talking; for others, play, art or creative activities may provide a more accessible way to explore what is happening. Therapy is collaborative, goal-focused and regularly reviewed, with the approach and duration adapted according to clinical need and progress. You don't need to know exactly what your child needs before getting in touch. We can work that out together.

Play and Creative Psychotherapy
Play and Creative Therapy offers children and young people aged 5–18 a safe, supportive space to explore thoughts, feelings and experiences in ways that feel natural to them. Children do not always have the words to explain what they are experiencing. Play, creativity and imagination can provide alternative ways to communicate, process emotions and make sense of difficult experiences. My specialist postgraduate training in Play Therapy enables me to use a range of developmentally appropriate approaches, including therapeutic play, art, sand tray, storytelling, games and other creative and expressive techniques. For younger children, therapy may be predominantly play and creative based. For older children and teenagers, creative approaches can be adapted around their age, interests and preferences and integrated alongside therapeutic conversation. Sessions are individually tailored according to the young person's developmental stage, presenting difficulties, communication style and therapeutic goals. Play & Creative Therapy is offered face-to-face at my Southwell clinic.
02
Integrative Psychotherapy
Integrative Psychotherapy provides a flexible, formulation-led approach for children and young people experiencing emotional or psychological difficulties. Therapy begins with understanding the young person's individual experiences, strengths, relationships, developmental needs and the factors contributing to their current difficulties. From this, we work collaboratively to identify meaningful therapeutic goals and an appropriate plan for intervention. My approach draws on humanistic and person-centred principles, attachment and developmental psychology, trauma-informed practice, systemic perspectives and psychodynamic understanding. I also use CBT-informed interventions and creative approaches where these are clinically appropriate. My specialist Play Therapy training further enables me to incorporate play, art, sand tray, storytelling and other creative approaches where these are helpful. The balance of approaches is adapted to each young person rather than following a single model of therapy. Progress is reviewed regularly and the duration and frequency of therapy are guided by clinical need, therapeutic goals and response to intervention. Available online and face-to-face at my Southwell clinic.
03
Counselling
Counselling offers children and young people a focused space to talk about difficulties they are experiencing in the here and now. It may be helpful when a young person is struggling with worries, anxiety, emotional difficulties, friendships or relationships, school, confidence, significant life changes or other challenges affecting their wellbeing. My approach is collaborative and primarily person-centred, with CBT-informed strategies and creative approaches incorporated where appropriate. Sessions are adapted to the young person's age, developmental stage and communication style, helping them make sense of what they are experiencing and develop practical ways of managing difficulties. The focus is on identifying clear therapeutic goals and supporting positive change, with progress reviewed throughout the work. Available online and face-to-face at my Southwell clinic.

Parental Formulation and Guidance
Sometimes the most helpful starting point is supporting the parent or carer rather than beginning individual therapy with the child. Parent Formulation & Guidance provides a collaborative space to understand a child's or young person's emotional and behavioural presentation in the context of their development, relationships, experiences and wider environment. Together, we consider what may be happening beneath the surface and identify factors that may be contributing to or maintaining difficulties. You will receive a clear, psychologically informed understanding of your child's needs, alongside practical recommendations to support emotional wellbeing, relationships, communication and emotional regulation at home. Where appropriate, I can also provide recommendations for additional support, signposting or onward referral. Available online and face-to-face.
05
Professional Consultation
Professional Consultation provides psychologically informed support for professionals working with children and young people. I offer consultation and formulation to help professionals develop a clearer understanding of a young person's emotional, behavioural and psychological needs and consider how these may be affecting their presentation across different environments. Consultation may include: Formulation and understanding of presenting difficulties Therapeutic recommendations and strategies Advice regarding emotional and behavioural needs Attendance at professional or multi-agency meetings Support for schools and other professionals working alongside a child or young person Consideration of appropriate onward referral or additional support My approach draws on my specialist child and adolescent training and experience within NHS CAMHS, including community and crisis services. Available online and face-to-face.
Common questions

It varies. Some people come for a handful of sessions; others stay longer. We'll review regularly and agree together how many initial sessions to plan for though children and young people can chose to end when they wish.
